It happens more often than not with elderly people - they believe that their time has gone, and all that's left is what they remember about their past, about their experiences. Their youth seems like a distant dream, and this was the time when they think they truly lived.
Now they have not only no future but also no present. Everything is grey and dull and boring. Usually these are the people who didn't fully live in the past either. It often happens right after people retire because they feel no longer needed.
And yet they are alive. As long as they are alive, they can live in the present. And the present can be colorful, inspired, and inspiring. It only takes some pondering about not what's taken from you but what's still possible.
If you catch yourself speaking in past tense too often, it's time to re-think your mission.
