My student came up to me and said, "May I play the Fantasy by Saint-Saens? Will I be able to learn it?" I wondered why does she want to master it and asked her if she intends to play this piece for one of the competitions we are preparing. To this she replied, "No, I'd like to learn it just for fun." Then we looked together at the score and discovered fairly manageable first section but the ending looked fierce. I said to her, "Prepare to spend some months with it." My student thought I was disapproving her choice and asked, "So you don't want me to play it?" Then I replied to her, "Never ask for permission to play what you like." What I could have said is this, "If you feel fear of not being able to do it then you should play it."
