When you are 73 and still learning, still trying to excel at something you love to do, some people around you will marvel at your stamina and curiosity. Others, though, will think you are an idiot, if at this age you still haven't reached the mastery.
Our self-destructive instinct is not to associate ourselves with people who wish us good and maybe (just maybe) want to follow our lead, but with the folks who all they do is whine about how unfairly the world is treating them. We want to convince those people we are worthy of success and yet all this does is to perpetuate their own negativity. Shun the non-believers. Go talk to the folks who trust you instead.
