Organ practice is like that too. I get many emails from senior subscribers who want to re-discover organ playing after not being able to sit on the organ bench for decades. They always tell me their experiences that after a few short months they can play the organ like many years before.
So the organ playing skills do come back. That's the good news. The bad news is that your bad practice habits (if you had any) come back as well.
That's the tricky part - you have to sort of rewire your brain to think differently, to practice differently, to play differently in order to pick up the most efficient and stylistically appropriate way of playing the organ again.
But this is not so easy and it does take time.
Luckily, you have this vision in front of your eyes, right? This path from where you are now to where you want to go.
Use this sense of higher purpose whenever you feel stuck, frustrated, or unappreciated.
